My Fitness Journey

David Kawahata

Although fitness professionals may seem to enjoy exercising 24×7 and always eating a healthy diet, I’m human like you and undergo the same test of patience and self-control.

Growing up, I played nearly every sport, staying highly active with daily practices and games. However, at some point, I decided to step away from most sports except golf. This decision led me down a path of hanging around the wrong crowds and making unwise choices. My self-confidence plummeted, and life seemed to spiral downward.

Then came a pivotal moment: I woke up one day, realizing I was unhealthy and 20 pounds overweight. Determined to turn my life around, I committed to running for 60 minutes daily and maintaining a healthy diet throughout the summer. I had shed significant weight when I returned for my junior year. My peers noticed and commented on my transformation further fueled my motivation.

I started incorporating weight training into my routine and soon noticed profound changes in myself. My self-confidence soared, my energy levels spiked, and I felt ready to tackle new challenges. My grades improved, I made more friends, and I was happier and more satisfied with life.

Throughout college, I continued this disciplined regimen of exercise and healthy eating. During this period, I discovered my true passion: helping others achieve the same positive changes. I opened a fitness center in my early twenties, which I still run today. My dedication to health and fitness grew stronger over the years. After earning a doctorate in health and human performance, I teach kinesiology at a local university and pursue scientific research in exercise psychology, strength and conditioning, and other health-related topics.

Reflecting on my fitness journey, the most significant motivator has been the positive psychological changes that come with regular exercise and healthy eating. These habits taught me the value of hard work, patience, and delayed gratification, leading to a healthier, happier, and more grateful version of myself. Even though I may not always enjoy exercising or sticking to a healthy diet, I persist because the alternative—immediate gratification followed by delayed disappointment—is not an option.
